2011 Columbus Day Special Report

2011 marks the 4th Annual Columbus Day Special.  Of course in October you can have the best of weather and the worst of weather.  Each year the trail conditions have been different.

  • Year 1 - Snow up higher on the La Sal Mountains.  Started at Hazard County and was very, very cold.  Jackets and leg warmers all day long.
  • Year 2 - Blue Bird Day but cold again.  Start from Burro Pass and the streams are frozen.
  • Year 3 - Perfect weather/Blue Bird Day.  Start from Burro Pass.
  • Year 4 - Great weather/Blue Bird Day.  Due to snow falling in the earlier days before Columbus Day we could only start at UPS, but we had "Hero Dirt!"
Last year was so amazing.  I was really looking forward to riding down from Burro Pass again.  But of course Mother Nature decided to drop a couple days of rain, snow, and cold weather over Utah the week before Columbus Day.  But if you had a second choice of where to start the ride UPS is it.  I love the sweeping turns mixed into the juniper mountainside, make and incredible trail.

I can't think of a better way to spend Columbus Day that taking a day trip to Moab, riding mountain bikes on some fantastic trails, and finishing the day at Rays surrounded by good friends.

See you next year.
