Opening the Box

Most of you are aware of the great Wife that I have based off of last year's Christmas gift to me.

Well if you thought that gift was great, I have a little story for you.

You see a couple months ago I was looking at an issue of Mountain Bike Magazine and they had an article about a certain bike.  They used the term, "a gun at a knife fight."

I mentioned to my wife that said "certain bike" would be the bike that I could replace the Scott Strike with and be perfectly happy.

Of course this certain bike was way out of our price range.  Especially out of the range if I were to spec it with some of the same line of parts on my Scott.  I also was looking at the Yeti 575 and really enjoyed my rides on the rental bike in Moab.  Sure it was a little heavier and a little more travel than I was used to, but I figured I was up for the change.  Especially if I could keep my Scott for races and other rides.

So as you all are aware the Yeti 575 came into our family of bikes.

Well my Wife is a very determined lady and unknown to me she was still looking for the "certain bike."  She had it all planned out.  There was an auction on ebay she was watching.  I was aware of the auction because she mentioned it to me asking if it was a good bike.  I said of course it is, but I didn't think too much of it since I was happy with the Yeti 575.  Her plan was to bid/win the bike and hopefully delete any emails about the auction before they would hit my smart phone.

The ending time of the auction came near and the timing was perfect.  I was in a closing and didn't have access to my phone.  I normally turn it doesn't make too much noise.  When I finished I had a couple messages to call my Wife.  I called her up and we talked.  The conversation moved to the auction and she mentioned she didn't win the bike and that it went for too much money.  But she wanted to share her effort that she was trying to get it for me but it just didn't work out.

I drove home and happened to look at my phone (while stopped at a traffic light) and saw I had an email to view.  The email said something about winning an auction.  I thought my Wife had won another baby item or something of the sort until I saw the word "bike."

I immediately called her up asking if she really just won said "certain bike."  She kind of backpedaled for a minute until she figured out that my phone and our email account had not synced yet to delete the evidence of winning the auction.  She was disappointed to not be able to have the bike just show up and be at the house to surprise me, but I was stoked to know said "certain bike" was coming.

Later on in the evening my Wife told me what really happened.  She said she didn't mean to win the bike, but this is what happened.  She was holding our baby, trying to watch our 3 other kids, and bid on the bike during the final minute.  She apparently put one extra "0" on her bid so it was in the range of $$,$$$ instead of $,$$$.  She really didn't realize this error until the auction was entering the final seconds and she was still the high bidder.  Her apparent limit was passed but she was still showing as the winner.  How could that be?  Then she realized the mistake and luckily the auction didn't go too out of control and only about $400 more than what she wanted to pay for it before it ended.

Neither she or I were upset at the result, but it was really funny to hear her recount the events and shock of the auction.  Too funny.

So blah, blah, blah right?

You are just thinking show us the bike!

I took this quick picture.  I will post more pics later.

2010 Yeti ASR 5 Carbon (full carbon frame)
Fox Fit 120 Fork
Fox RP23 rear shock
Full Shimano XTR (shifters, brakes, front/rear derailleur, wheels/hubs
5" of travel for 24 lbs.

Now I have two problems.
  1. When are we going to St. George to ride again?
  2. Who wants to buy a 2010 Yeti 575 used 2 times?

Wow. Just wow. Your wife is awesome. Maybe we can hatch a plan where your wife calls my wife and casually mentions buying you two bikes within the past 2 months, and how we deserve it for working so hard, etc.

How much does bike B weigh in at?

Brandon - Sweet ride! Rick and I were talking just the other day about arranging a day trip to St. George. I want to get south as well to get out on my mtn. bike. Let's find a day that works and do it.

Give or take an order of magnitude - not a huge deal. That is the kind of error that makes space shuttles blow up.

Bring that squisher down this direction for a little warm winter riding.
